City Introduction

City of Music

Ambon City, the capital of Maluku Province, was awarded the title of World City of Music by UNESCO on October 31, 2019. This title was given due to Ambon’s rich musical heritage, the contribution of its outstanding musicians, and the city’s efforts in combining culture with sustainable development.

Ambon is known as the birthplace of legendary Indonesian musicians such as Glenn Fredly, Ruth Sahanaya, and Bob Tutupoly. The city government actively supports music education, improves infrastructure such as recording studios and performance venues, and holds various music festivals to promote the city as a world-class music center.

This title not only confirms Ambon’s cultural identity, but also supports local economic growth through tourism and the creative industry.

Ambon is currently continuing to develop with various initiatives to improve the quality of life of its people. One of the main focuses is city planning, including the management of street vendors to reduce congestion in certain areas. In addition, international relations such as cooperation with other cities continue to be strengthened to support the health sector, waste management, and tourism.

The city also faces challenges such as environmental management and infrastructure, but the local government is actively seeking solutions to create a more friendly and sustainable city. Ambon remains a cultural and tourism hub, with events and initiatives highlighting the richness of local traditions.
