Four Steps to Prevent Corruption in the Regions

In the Kompas Collaboration Forum-City Leader Community discussion, four proposed steps to improve governance emerged to prevent corruption in the regions.

JAKARTA, KOMPAS – There are four steps that all stakeholders should take to suppress corruption in the regions, namely regulation, digitization, education, and remuneration. Corruption in the regions allegedly occurs in the government bureaucracy, is complex, and involves many other parties.

In the discussion “Good Governance and Learning from Anti-Corruption Efforts” held by the Kompas Collaboration Forum – City Leader Community, at the Kompas Tower, Jakarta, Tuesday (7/3/2023), a number of regional heads expressed their hope that the regional heads’ intentions to work would not be disturbed. The regional heads said that sometimes law enforcers still questioned them, even extorting government officials, under the pretext of project facilitation.

The discussion forum organized by Kompas Daily and the Association of Indonesian City Governments (Apeksi) was attended by 10 mayors and deputy mayors.

Responding to input from a number of mayors, the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud MD, who was present as the key informant, said that the government had actually issued a regulation that any ongoing government projects could not be investigated by law enforcement officials (APH). The inspection must go through the government internal supervisory apparatus (APIP) first.
